Overview
As a follow-up seminar to the Regional Seminar on Biofouling Management and Invasive Aquatic Species in the East Asian Seas that occurred on 23 June 2021, this collab is part of a series of technical assistance and capacity-building to bring into effect the necessary legal, policy, and institutional arrangements to address issues related to biofouling; and support the implementation of the “Guidelines for the control and management of ships’ biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species” issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for implementation at the regional and national levels.
The objectives of the seminar were:
- To shed light on the biological and chemical characteristics of biofouling and the economic impacts of invasive aquatic species transferred by biofouling (and/or ways to obtain information on the economic impacts from relevant industries and other stakeholders);
- To share information and knowledge on technological and other innovative solutions to combat biofouling;
- To identify and agree on cooperation needs across the marine value chain and beyond to support innovative solutions and best practices on data and information sharing, policies, and programs; and
- To seek feedback on the draft biofouling management measures crafted for the East Asian/ASEAN region.
